While there are major advantages of my German and my English giving me a head start thanks to many linguistic similarities, I have had a major set-back in this mission that has been slowing me down tremendously; simply finding opportunities to converse! Dutch culture is different to others I am used to; everyone has been very nice and polite to me, and nobody speaks English to me, but after a brief first conversation they tend to disappear, and there is little hope of seeing them again due to their always packed schedules.
They are a bit too organised. Luckily I am finally getting through to some people and starting to socialise properly, hanging out for hours or even almost an entire day, speaking just in Dutch. But for the most part, when I meet people I tend to have a similar first introduction conversation over and over again. This is a terrible way to make progress to be able to discuss many different topics required to be fluent in a language.
While I continue to meet people that I can converse more deeply with, I decided to tackle the problem in a unique different way; I need my brief first conversations which are easy to find to be unique so I’m discussing something different and improving my language skills in different ways. So I had a crazy idea: Speed dating as a tool for language learning!
Speed dating is a relatively new concept, apparently started by Jewish communities in the late 90s to help shy people pair-off. I had only ever seen it on some American TV shows, and not really thought much about it. I wasn’t interested in actually finding a date though. I just wanted to get some Dutch practice because they had been notoriously hard to hang out with as friends!
This video gives something of the flavour of the event. Dancing and music beginning most days at noon or earlier and continuing non-stop into the small hours of the morning. Age is definitely no barrier — those attending range from 18 to 80, and the older participants are regularly the first up and last to stagger home to bed late at night. The best known of the matchmakers is Willie Daly, who deals in horses when not dealing in love and who claims to have been instrumental in getting hundreds, if not thousands, of couples to the altar.
Do NOT go expecting a sophisticated or upmarket event. Matchmaking in progress, by fyunkie Some nods to change are incorporated — there are speed-dating events these days — but mostly the modus operandi is to provide lots of opportunities for people to get together at dances, sessions and in the pubs.
If a quick light lunch at great value is what you want, look no further. It has been a while since I ventured into the IFSC and while I know the building is continuing apace, I was still surprised at the scale and the amount of restaurant and retail units that have sprang up. It has grown up, and become a real mini city. The new bridge leading from the south quays brings it into play for lunching southsiders, and indeed The IFSC is now a destination for lunch or dinner, no longer the preserve of bankers and brokers.
I hadn’t been in Kudo’s before and it is a bright and airy room looking out on one of the new busy boulevards of the IFSC. The menu is mainly Asian, but they do have some European choices from the restaurant next door, but really the Asian menu is very good and really what you should be eating here to enjoy. The menu offers two soups, about five starters and a dozen main courses.
Carol obviously knows the menu and ordered chargrilled prawns on a mango salad as a main couse, while I had to try the Thai Tom Yam Goong soup, followed by the Crying Tiger curry. While we waited Carol told me about her plans for speed dating in the bar in the evening which they are planning for September, and seriously, it sounds like a good place, what with so many young singles working literally on the doorstop.
The restaurant is filling up when the soup arrives.

It developed from a primitive contest of speed or stamina between two horses into a spectacle involving large fields of runners, sophisticated electronic monitoring equipment, and immense sums of money, but its essential feature has always been the same:

We always said we’d go back and for our birthdays this year managed to get there for a night. We were unbelievably upgraded to the suite which just made the experience so memorable.
The room and balcony was fantastic. We couldn’t get over it, place was so big and comfortable. We had dinner in the Pullman restraunt which I highly recommend.
